
Mary Anne Krupsak

Mary Anne Krupsak was born on March 26, 1932, in Schenectady, New York. She matriculated through the University of Rochester, and in 1955 she earned a master's degree in public communications from Boston University. After working on the gubernatorial campaign of W. Averell Harriman and as an administrative assistant to Congressman Samuel Stratton, Krupsak decided to enroll at the University of Chicago and graduated with a law degree in 1962.
Krupsak held seats in the New York State Assembly from 1969 to 1973 and the New York State Senate from 1973 to 1975. She was elected as the first woman Lieutenant Governor of New York under Governor Hugh Carey in 1975 and served until 1978, at which time she ran against and lost to Governor Carey in the primary election.
The Mary Anne Krupsak Papers held in the University of Rochester Archives contain subject and correspondence relating to constituent concerns in New York State and materials concerning legislative issues such as the Equal Rights Amendment, gay rights and women's rights.
