New York has been a leader in protecting and managing our environment. In recognition of the 50th Earth Day on April 22nd, 2020, the State Archives is showcasing records that document our Climate, Pollution Control and abatement, Water Supply management, and Forest Preservation and management in New York State. These records are predominantly from the Department of Environmental Conservation—also celebrating its 50th anniversary in April 2020—and its predecessor, the Conservation Department.

Explore the documents and images below and learn more through selection of articles from New York Archives magazine highlighting stories from our environment. Bring these resources into the classroom with Classroom Connections.
