Description
A pen and ink self-portrait sketched by Major John André on the day prior to his execution on October 2, 1780, created from the New York State Department of Education Division of Visual Instruction Instructional lantern slides. André had been captured with papers implicating both himself and American General Benedict Arnold in the turning over of West Point to the British. As he was in civilian clothes rather than his military uniform, André was hanged as a spy.
