Juanita M. Kreps

1921-2010
 Director of the New York Stock Exchange, United States Secretary of Commerce

 

Clara Juanita Morris Kreps was born on January 11, 1921, in Lynch, Kentucky. She earned her bachelors from Berea College in 1942, and graduated with PhD in economics at Duke University in 1948. She began her career by teaching economics at Denison University, Hofstra University, Queens College, and Duke University. 

In 1972, Kreps became the first woman director of the New York Stock Exchange and held that title until 1977. She was also the first woman appointed as United States Secretary of Commerce under the Carter Administration and held the position from January 1977 to October 1979.

Kreps died in Durham, North Carolina, on July 5, 2010.
