Compelling Question: When should individuals be punished for taking a perspective different than the majority?

Setting the Stage: Read excerpts from the Forfeiture Act and complete the Document Analysis Graphic Organizer. As a class, discuss the purpose of this act and what it would mean for individuals living in New York State in 1779.

Learning Activity: Analyze each of the cases below. Write a detailed timeline for each case, highlighting the evidence against each defendant. 

Assessment: Either participate in a Socratic Seminar or write an argumentative essay discussing the compelling question and whether the individuals in these cases should have been punished for their views and activities.
